But it\u00a0also connects the State of Israel\u2019s founders with the pioneers of previous generations, people like:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Chaya Bareli, a granddaughter (from both sides) of the Bilu pioneers who founded Gedera in 1884;<\/li>\n<li>Yehoshua Ben Arieh, an Israel Prize winning Professor of History and the great-grandson of Yehoshua Stampfer, who\u00a0<b>walked<\/b>\u00a0from\u00a0Hungary to Jerusalem in 1869 at the age of 17; and,<\/li>\n<li>Ephraim Ben Eliahu, a Company Commander in the War of Independence, whose family in Israel dates back 17 generations &#8211; since just\u00a0after the Spanish Inquisition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"color: #222222;\">One of our recent interviews took us back several centuries further. Haganah veteran David Oved\u2019s family hails from Peki\u2019in in the Upper Galilee, where Jews have\u00a0lived continuously since the time of the Second Temple! In his interview, Oved proudly declared \u201c<span class=\"il\">We<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">never<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"il\">went<\/span>\u00a0into exile\u201d and that his family had\u00a0no tradition of saying \u201cNext Year in Jerusalem!\u201dFor generations in the Diaspora, Jews around the world longed for the return to Zion. Our prayers linked us to this special place even when\u00a0<span class=\"il\">we<\/span>\u00a0weren\u2019t physically in the Land of Israel.
